About Dr. Stukey

A More Peaceful Goodbye

I'm Dr. Kirsten Stukey. I began practicing veterinary medicine in 2016 and worked in general practice until 2024, when I started providing in-home euthanasia house calls in my spare time. I ended up falling in love with the work, and it now makes up the main part of what I do. I still fill in for veterinary practices around DFW as a general practice veterinarian.

I have always been especially drawn to senior and end-of-life care. Walking alongside families as they make some of the most difficult decisions for the pets they love is something I truly feel called to do. It is the greatest honor to be invited into your home to help you navigate one of life's most difficult moments and to give your pet a peaceful, personal, and dignified goodbye.

Cash, pictured here with me, is the inspiration behind the name Cash's Crossing. I rescued him while I was in veterinary school, and it was love at first sight. He was right by my side for 10 years before he passed away from congestive heart failure.

I’ve experienced how difficult it is to say goodbye to my own pets. I’ve been fortunate to have close veterinarian friends come to my home to help me through those goodbyes, and I still remember the overwhelming sense of calm I felt when they walked through the door. It was like I could finally exhale. I knew they would take care of everything.

That is what I hope to bring into your home: a calm, reassuring presence that makes an incredibly difficult moment a little easier and leaves you feeling a little less alone.

Before the Visit

After you schedule, you’ll complete a short form with the information I need for your pet’s visit. Most common questions are answered in the FAQ, and you are always welcome to text me if you need anything else.

Comfort & Sedation

Your pet is first given a sedative injection to help them relax and drift into a deep sleep. Once they are fully asleep and no longer aware of their surroundings, we will proceed with the final medication.

Saying Goodbye

Once your pet is deeply asleep, the final medication is given gently. You can remain with them throughout the entire process and take the time you need.

Travel Fees

There is no travel fee for appointments within my immediate service area. For homes farther than 12 miles from the 75206 ZIP code, a travel fee of $25–$150 may apply depending on location.

Your travel fee will be confirmed when scheduling. Locations requiring more than approximately one hour of travel may require additional advance notice and may have more limited appointment availability.

If you choose private cremation, your pet’s ashes will be returned to you in 1–2 weeks using one of the options below. Keepsakes from communal cremation will also be returned using one of these options.

Questions families often have.

What is in-home pet euthanasia?

In-home pet euthanasia allows your pet to pass peacefully in the comfort and familiarity of home rather than traveling to a veterinary clinic. I come to your home and guide you through the entire process, from sedation through your pet’s peaceful passing. If you have chosen cremation, I will also take care of transporting your pet and coordinating their aftercare.

Why choose in-home pet euthanasia?

For many pets and families, saying goodbye at home can be a much more peaceful experience. There are no stressful car rides, unfamiliar smells or sounds, or time spent waiting in a veterinary clinic. Your pet can stay where they feel safest and most comfortable, whether that is curled up in their favorite bed, lying in the backyard, or surrounded by the people they love.

I take care of the logistics so that you can focus on your pet. The experience can be personalized to your family and what feels most meaningful to you.

How long will the appointment take?

I am usually in your home for about 30–60 minutes. The appointment is intentionally unhurried, and there is no need to rush through your goodbye. Every pet and family is different, and we will move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

Can other family members, children, and pets be present?

Yes. Anyone you would like to have present is welcome to be there, including children and other pets.

If another pet is very active, vocal, protective, or uncomfortable with strangers, it may be best for them to stay in a separate area during the sedation process so that we can keep the environment as calm as possible for the pet we are helping. Afterwards, we can arrange for them to see and spend time with their housemate if you would like.

How do I know when it is time?

This looks different for every pet and family, and it is a deeply personal decision. Often there is not one single moment when the answer becomes completely clear.

If you are unsure, an appointment with your regular veterinarian or a quality-of-life consultation with me can help you talk through the changes you are seeing and what they may mean for your pet. Online quality-of-life assessment tools can also be invaluable for looking at things more objectively and tracking changes over time.

Do you offer same-day or emergency appointments?

Absolutely. Whenever my schedule allows, I am happy to accommodate same-day or urgent appointments, although I cannot guarantee availability. Many of my appointments are scheduled within 24 hours.

What is your availability?

Most appointments are scheduled Monday through Friday between 10 AM and 4 PM. My availability varies from week to week, and I am also happy to arrange evening or weekend appointments when needed and when my schedule allows.

How do I prepare for the appointment?

There is very little you need to do beforehand. Choose a comfortable place where your pet feels at ease. This might be their favorite bed, the couch, a sunny spot outside, or wherever your family feels most comfortable. You are welcome to have favorite blankets, toys, or other meaningful items nearby.

You’re welcome to offer your pet their favorite treats beforehand. In rare cases, sedatives may cause nausea, so consider offering smaller portions. If you have an extra-special treat you’d like to give them, such as chocolate or steak, I recommend saving it for the time I administer the sedative injection.

One thing I do ask is that you have a parking space available for my vehicle with easy access to your home, particularly if I will be transporting your pet for cremation. Other than that, you do not need to prepare anything specific for my arrival.
